Solid growth for personal income in the Pittsburgh region

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) compiles annual estimates of personal income for all counties and metropolitan areas in the United States. In November, the BEA released updated local area personal income estimates for 2018. For 2018, the annual per capita personal income for the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is estimated to be $58,072, a 6.6% increase from an estimated $54,471 in 2017

Pittsburgh’s +6.6% growth between 2017 and 2018 ranks  4th among the 40 largest MSAs in the nation, only behind San Jose(+7.6%), San Francisco(+7.3%) and slightly lower than Seattle(+6.7%) over this period.

Personal income represents income that people get from wages, proprietors' income, dividends, interest, rents, and government benefits. A person's income is counted in the county, metropolitan statistical area, or other area where they live, even if they work elsewhere. Per capita personal income represents total personal income divided by population.

By county within the Pittsburgh MSA, annual per capita personal incomes in 2018 range from a low of $42,649 in Fayette County to $62,958 in Allegheny County.
